Why the M1 Grayston Bridge inquiry has been postponed – again!

After months of delays and several postponements, the M1 Grayston Bridge inquiry resumed on Tuesday 26 September – only to be postponed promptly once again. In the weeks prior to the resumption, the Department of Labour’s Teboho Thejane said, ‘Families that have been waiting to hear all the arguments so that they can put this matter to rest, to hear what has happened and if there are any people that are responsible for this. But at this point… we’re waiting to hear the arguments.’

Here’s where we stand with the Grayston Bridge enquiry

As you are aware, this enquiry has suffered multiple postponements for various reasons. Here’s where it stands as of today.

The Department of Labour’s (DoL) inquiry into the collapse of the Grayston drive pedestrian bridge, on Gauteng’s M1 highway – which resulted in the death of two people and the injury of a further 19 –  has been postponed, possibly until July, 2018. The presiding inspector Lennie Samuel said that he would make a decision on this within the next two weeks.

Construction of the Grayston Bridge resumes

Later this month –­ on the 27th to be precise ­– the enquiry into the Grayston Bridge collapse (which occurred on the 14th of October, 2015) will resume after several delays. In the meantime, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has announced that construction of the bridge is set to continue. On Monday 27 February, it released the following statement:
