Andreo Du Preez

Andreo has multiple course qualifications in the field of occupational health and safety, and is currently completing a programme in safety management through Unisa, with a view to enrolling in NEBOSH and auditors’ training in 2017. Andreo has worked in the field of training since his time as a Junior Officer in the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1988. He was registered as an Assessor and Moderator with the ETDP SETA in 2004 and has been doing unit standard outcomes-based education and training ever since. In 2009 he registered with the Institute for Working at Heights (IWH) as a Fall Arrest Technician and as a Fall Protection Planner, joining NOSA as a Height Safety Trainer in 2012. His current duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): • Height safety training • Height safety consultations • Fall protection plan development • Learning programme review and development

A harness is not just a harness

There is a common belief amongst employers that all height safety harnesses are the same, and that more affordable harnesses will provide their workforce with the same protection as expensive harnesses. Unfortunately, this is not true. Harnesses are designed for specific tasks at height, ranging from basic fall arrest harnesses to top-of-the-range rope access harnesses.

Employers must therefore carefully consider the tasks they need their workforce to perform before procuring safety harnesses.
